Self portrait

Michael Attewell trained as an artist at King’s, Newcastle, specialising in Sculpture and Education.

He went straight into a teaching career after National Service.  Although Mike continued to attend part- time courses, serious painting had to wait until he took early retirement in the 1987.

Now in his eighties, Mike has exhibited annually since 1980 at several local centres in the north east of England - less so recently.  High points in his career include winning the Stanniland award in 1992, taking on a number of enjoyable portrait commissions, and earning the gratitude of the parents of Rachel Corrie (killed by an Israeli bulldozer in Rafah in Gaza), and receiving commendations from Bruce Kent, Tony Wedgewood Benn, Jeremy Deller and others for his imaginative campaign work.
