Millet saw the peasant as a heroic figure, and Van Gogh felt the same. My wife's father rented a 13 acre smallholding, but like Crusoe was 'lord of all he surveyed'. Success or failure was down to his planning, his contrivance and his hard work.
His hens followed him as though he was a demigod
- or was it the buckets?
