The Dellacos Ingres memorial has a long story. The colossi were originally intended to flank a significant railway cutting at the approaches to a station at Montauban, where Ingres was born, but the intervening Franco-Prussian war diverted the allocated funds.
Later, the railway was re-routed, bypassing his home town. Without much point, the whole project was left in a forgotten backwater. Attempts to revive the plan have failed repeatedly through lack of money, while Ingres' reputation fades.
